DIY SOS: The Big BuildIMDB 7.0/10

Tonight, Nick Knowles, the DIY SOS team and their volunteers step up to help the Newcombe family in Kent: Mike (39), Chantal (37), Luca (8) and Sonny (4) and the youngest, two year old Arlo. Every parent thinks of their child as being one in a million, but Arlo Newcombe really is. Arlo has a lung condition, so rare; it has never been seen before in the UK. He was born with a strain of lung disease, with a particular genetic mutation - a shock after a perfectly healthy pregnancy and birth. It means that his lungs must be constantly supported which has left him dependant on oxygen 24/7. From birth the family have been confined to a 5ft cubicle at Kings College Hospital - with little existence beyond the cubicle and a tethered breathing tube - and all whilst witnessing "life on the knife edge" of the intensive care ward. Despite his rarity, Arlo is mentally and physically a typical toddler. The Newcombe's defied all the odds and after two years in intensive care and specialist training for the parents - Arlo finally made it home. However, Arlo now needs a minimum of two highly-specialist trained carers on constant watch, making family life - let alone sleep for mum and dad - almost impossible. Trailing breathing tubes, equipment the size of tumble dryers, and no downstairs bathroom have turned their once safe home into a risky space for the boys. It's also urgent that dad Mike returns to work to pay for the mortgage and bills , or they risk, not only losing the family home but also losing Arlo - as he would rebound straight back into intensive care. There is hope, in the form of "super gran" Laverne. Fully trained-up and already a big part of the family's life - she is ready and willing to give up the teaching assistant job, that she loves and help the family permanently and be there for her grandson and to allow Mike to get the family back on track. The DIY SOS team have amassed an volunteer army, for Arlo and the family, and they prepared to work their socks off, to create a safe and inspiring space for Arlo and that this family, can call home.
