For migrants crossing illegally from Mexico to the United States, surviving in the desert alone can be a brutal experience. But add to that threats from people traffickers, many of whom are affiliated with cartels, and immigrants can face extortion, miserable conditions at "stash houses" and sometimes even being forced into prostitution. Once in the traffickers clutches, migrants become a sort of human cargo, treated as nothing but business assets to the ruthless organized criminals holding them hostage. This story is told from the inside, in the words of the migrants and from the mouths of the people smuggling foot soldiers.
